Alloy
A mixture of two or more metals. In jewelry, pure 24k gold is often alloyed with silver, copper, or zinc to increase durability for daily wear.
Appraisal
A professional valuation of a piece of jewelry, often required for insurance purposes to confirm the 'African Brilliance' value of your acquisition.
Bail
The component at the top of a pendant that allows it to hang from a necklace chain.
Bezel Setting

Carat (ct)
The unit of weight for gemstones. Not to be confused with 'Karat', which measures gold purity.
Clarity
A measure of the internal 'inclusions' or external 'blemishes' in a diamond or gemstone.
Engraving

Lustre
The quality of light reflected from the surface of a pearl or gemstone.
Pavé
A setting where small gemstones are placed closely together, covering the gold surface to create a 'pavement' of brilliance.
Prong Setting
